Russian belongs to the Eastern Slavonic language family. It is related to Belorussian and Ukrainian languages and is spoken by almost 300 million people in thirty different countries. The main purpose to create the Slavic writing system was to translate Bible. And it was done by monks Cyril and Methodius in the 9th century, including some letters from Greek and Hebrew. Therefore, it is called Cyrillic alphabet. Later, Peter the Great modified it and created new civil alphabet. Today it consists of 33 letters: 21 consonants, 10 vowels and 2 signs.
